Seat of Power: The Rocking Chair Rivalry

Until 2015, the Fanning 66 Outpost held the record for the largest rocking chair in the world. Standing at an impressive 42 feet tall, this iconic structure weighs in at 27,500 pounds. Built out of steel and wool, this is not your average grandma’s rocking chair.

However, another rocking chair took the world record when a larger structure was erected in Casey, Illinois. Jim Bolin officially made history when his chair was entered as the world record holder in the Guiness Book of World Records on October 20, 2015. Bolin’s chair is an impressive 56 feet tall, and weighs in at 46,200 pounds. To secure the world record title, Bolin had to prove that the chair could indeed rock. With the help of 10 men, he was able to accomplish this feat, marking his place in history.

This giant rocking chair is not the only colossus in town. Casey’s “Big Things in a Small Town” initiative also features other oversized monuments like a gargantuan wind chime, and mailbox.

While Casey may hold the official title of “World’s Largest Rocking Chair,” we have to give points to Fanning’s chair due to its location on 66. Regardless of which chair you think is more impressive, they are both great pieces of quirky Americana, and deserve to be visited on your next road trip.
